Institute for Water Research (NIVA) NIVA is an independent foundation that performs Research and Development studies, monitoring, water resources management and feasibility studies in fresh- and marine waters. NIVA, which
is by far the largest interdisciplinary applied water research unit in
Norway, provides information about water related issues at national and
international levels. In doing so, we assist authorities, the private
sector and the public towards the common goal of an improved aquatic environment
through a sound water management. NIVA has a total staff of 170, including 85 research scientists. Akvaplan-niva has another 20 research scientists. Together, their scientific competence covers most fields of research and consultancy activities related to fresh and marine waters, as well as relevant aspects of water treatment and computer sciences. NIVA is governed by a board of seven members appointed by the Norwegian Ministry of Environment, the Research Council of Norway and by NIVA's employees themselves.
