Whole Organism
The quality assurance programme for the harmonisation of whole organism responses in aquatic species is led by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), UK.
Whole organism methods used for national or international monitoring programmes should be subject to appropriate internal and external Analytical Quality Control (AQC), particularly as this is a requirement for submitting data to the ICES database. The role of AQC is of importance when using biological effect methods for monitoring Good Environmental Status (GES) under Descriptor 8 of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and other national monitoring programmes e.g. UK Marine Strategy in support of OSPAR CEMP.
Intercalibration information
Information on intercalibration exercises can be found on the respective whole organism page. The intercalibration is self-funded and includes no administrative fees. The cost to the participants include only transportation of the prepared sample material (where appropriate) and the internal costs of running the assessment within the laboratory.
A simple report will include the results from all intercalibration participants (coded to preserve anonymity), and a comparison of performance of the participating laboratories.
